Variable frequency drives and automation on board

On many vessels, pumps and fans still run at full speed all the time, whatever the real demand. A variable frequency drive (VFD) adjusts motor speed to the load: less wear, softer starts and less energy used.

At a glance

  • Selection, installation and programming of VFDs
  • Process and system automation on board
  • Generator control and microgrids
  • Integration with vessel sensors and alarms
  • Installation often possible during operations

What a variable frequency drive does

  • Matches speed to demand instead of running the motor flat out
  • Soft starts, reducing current peaks and mechanical shocks
  • Protects the motor through current and fault monitoring
  • Cuts consumption of pumps and fans: for a centrifugal pump, power varies with the cube of speed

Our services

  • Drive selection and sizing for the motor and application
  • VFD panel fabrication, with optional bypass
  • Onboard installation, often during normal vessel operations
  • Programming, parameter tuning and alarm integration
  • Process and system automation, generator control and microgrids
  • ComAp controllers: we are a ComAp Channel Partner in Quebec
  • Troubleshooting faulty drives and replacing obsolete equipment

Application example: cooling pumps

Seawater (SW) and low temperature (LT) cooling pumps are sized for worst-case conditions. Most of the time they deliver far more flow than needed. That is why we developed EnerGuard, which regulates these pumps to the real demand. Estimate the impact on your vessel with the EnerGuard calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can a drive be installed without stopping the vessel?

Often yes. Installation can frequently be done during normal vessel operations, depending on the system.

Do you program the drives?

Yes. We handle selection, installation, programming, tuning and integration with vessel sensors and alarms.
