Thermography and megger testing: preventive maintenance for vessels

Most electrical failures on board give warning signs first. A hot connection, degrading insulation or unbalanced load is invisible to the eye but measurable.

At a glance

  • Infrared thermography of switchboards under load, no shutdown
  • Megger insulation testing of critical circuits and motors
  • Engineer report: every fault photographed and ranked by urgency
  • Corrections at preferred rates
  • Re-measurement after work, before and after report at no charge

Thermography: seeing heat

A thermal camera measures component temperatures while the system runs under load. It is the fastest way to survey an electrical switchboard without shutting it down. In minutes it reveals:

  • loose or oxidized connections that heat up
  • breakers and contactors at end of life
  • unbalanced phases
  • overloaded cables and bus bars

Megger testing: measuring insulation

A megger measures the insulation resistance of cables, motors and switchboards. In a marine environment, humidity and salt degrade insulation over time. Tracking these values from one survey to the next shows degradation before it causes a ground fault or short circuit.

Our preventive vessel electrical survey

  1. Thermography and megger on board: finding hot connections and degrading insulation.
  2. Engineer report: each fault photographed, ranked by urgency, with the correction needed.
  3. Repairs of the faults found at preferred rates.
  4. Re-measurement after the work: a before and after report at no charge, signed by an engineer.

One supplier from survey to proof that everything is fixed, on board at a time that suits operations.

When to schedule the survey

A vessel electrical survey is ideal before the navigation season or a long voyage, when a failure would cost the most. It is also recommended after major work or an emergency repair.

Frequently asked questions

Do equipment need to be shut down for thermography?

No. Thermography is done while equipment runs under load, which is exactly what reveals hot spots.

Is the report signed?

Yes. The final report is signed by an engineer and shows every fault photographed, ranked by urgency, with the recommended correction.

What happens after the survey?

We can correct the faults found at preferred rates, then measure again. The before and after report is provided at no charge.

How often should a vessel electrical survey be done?

The most useful time is before the navigation season or a long voyage, and after major work. Tracking megger values over time shows degradation.
